Bhagat Singh is a revolutionary, socialist, and an atheist who served as an inspiration for future revolutionaries due to his selfless devotion towards India's independence movement. He took part in revolutionary activities during the Indian independence movement under the inspiration of Mahatma Gandhi. Bhagat Singh was born on 28 September 1907 at Banga village, Jaranwala Tehsil, then Ferozepur District, Punjab. His father Sardar Kishan Singh was a labourer who belonged to the Jat caste. Bhagat Singh was named 'Bhagat' meaning devotee because his birth coincided with the Hindu festival of Vaisakhi, which is celebrated to commemorate the Sikh guru Hargobind's release from Gwalior Fort prison where he was kept by Mughal rulers. Bhagat Singh was inspired by patriotism since his childhood days. At the age of ten, he witnessed Indian National Congress leader Bal Gangadhar Tilak's visit to his village. He commented that everyone seemed inspired by Tilak's patriotic speech, but did nothing about it. This did not go well with young Bhagat Singh who wished to become like him. Since his childhood days, he was influenced by the actions of revolutionaries like Nala Lai and Manmath Nath Rakshit who preached revolutionary violence against British rule in India. At an early age, Bhagat Singh decided that he wanted to dedicate his life for the country. He thought that the best way to rule India was by changing the people. He believed that it was not possible for the British government to rule India peacefully. Therefore, he decided to enact drastic change in the system by waging war against it. He thought if he did not act against British rule, then there would be no end to exploitation of the country by them. Bhagat Singh joined student politics at age 20 while studying in Ferozepur College where he used his knowledge of English literature and political science to influence people towards independence movement. In college, he also made new friends who shared his views on freedom movement and were greatly inspired by his views. His initial conclusions about the freedom struggle were derived from his study of Indian literature from both Western and Indian languages. Bhagat Singh was greatly influenced by the writings of Swami Vivekananda and Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay which prompted him to begin a lifelong mission of fighting for a just cause. He had tremendous faith in himself and believed that he would succeed in his mission to serve the country. He wrote an essay later at Lahore which was published in a newspaper called "Extremist" in 1923. cfa1e77820
